Concrete work looks simple from the driveway. Pour it, screed it, let it sit. What separates a slab that's still flat in fifteen years from one that's heaving and cracked in three happens before the truck ever shows up, and most homeowners never see that part. Here's what to actually ask about, and what a bad answer sounds like.

Ask what's going under the concrete, not just what's on top

Anyone can pour a slab. The base underneath it is what decides whether that slab stays put. Around Bossier City the soil is mostly heavy clay, a lot of it river-bottom clay from being this close to the Red River. Clay swells when it's wet and shrinks hard when it dries out in August, and a slab poured straight on unprepared clay will move with it. That's what causes the diagonal crack running corner to corner on so many older driveways in this area.

A contractor who knows the ground here will excavate several inches past the slab depth, compact a base of crushed stone (4 inches is typical, more on soft spots), and grade it so water doesn't pond under the edges. Ask what base material they're using and how thick. "We'll pour right on the dirt" is a walk-away answer, full stop.

Get specific on thickness, reinforcement, and PSI

These three numbers matter more than almost anything in the bid. A patio can get by at 4 inches thick with 3,000 PSI concrete. A driveway that sees truck and trailer weight needs 5 to 6 inches and often 3,500 PSI or higher. Reinforcement should be either rebar on a grid, commonly #3 bar every 18 inches, or welded wire mesh, with fiber mesh mixed into the concrete itself for extra crack resistance. If a bid just says "concrete driveway" with a price and nothing about thickness or steel, ask directly. A contractor who can't answer without checking isn't the one pouring your project.

Also ask about control joints, the grooves cut into the surface every 8 to 10 feet. Concrete is going to crack somewhere as it cures and shrinks. A joint just tells it where to crack instead of leaving it to pick a spot on its own. Those joints should be cut within 24 to 48 hours of the pour, while the concrete is still green enough to saw cleanly.

Local red flags worth walking away from

  • No mention of a permit. Bossier City requires a permit for new driveway approaches and slab work tied to a structure, and Bossier Parish handles it for jobs outside city limits. A contractor who says "we don't bother with that" is putting the risk on you, not them.
  • A price that's dramatically lower than two other bids with no explanation. Usually it means less base prep, thinner slab, or no rebar, cuts you won't see until the cracking starts.
  • No written contract with thickness, PSI, and reinforcement spelled out. A handshake and a verbal quote leaves you no way to prove what you paid for.
  • Reluctance to give you a certificate of insurance. If a worker gets hurt on your property and the contractor isn't insured, that liability can land on the homeowner.
  • Pressure to pay the full amount up front. A deposit is normal. Paying in full before the pour is not.

How permitting and inspection actually works here

For most residential concrete work in Bossier City, the process runs through the city's permitting office if you're inside city limits, or the parish if you're in unincorporated areas like parts of Haughton or outside the city boundary. Driveway approaches that tie into a public street usually need a separate approval since they affect drainage and the right-of-way. If you're in a newer subdivision off Airline Drive or in the East Bossier growth areas, check your HOA covenants too, plenty of them have rules on driveway width, material, or even the color of stamped concrete before the city ever gets involved. Expect roughly 24 to 48 hours before you can walk on new concrete, about a week before light vehicle traffic, and the full 28 days before it reaches its rated strength. Anyone telling you to park a truck on it the next day either doesn't know better or doesn't care.
